The Harmony at the Heart of Japan

Custom-crafted itineraries.
Designed around you, never around a template.
Harmony in Japan is rarely about everything looking or feeling the same. It is the ease with which opposites can coexist: crowded crossings beside quiet rituals, digital worlds beside mountain landscapes, meticulous order beside moments of pure play. Across Japan, contrast doesn't need resolving. Somehow, it belongs.
Tokyo introduces that rhythm at full scale, moving from neighbourhood streets and Skytree heights to immersive digital art, Fuji views and the imaginative world of DisneySea. Kyoto changes the pace through bamboo paths, vermilion gates and Nara, before Osaka brings back brightness, appetite and movement. Beyond the cities, Amanohashidate and the fishing village of Ine place sea, pine-covered land and everyday life within the same calm frame.
和 Wa: The Harmony at the Heart of Japan is Duniya Safari’s introduction to a country where seemingly different worlds sit comfortably beside one another, each making the other feel more distinctly Japanese.
What's included
A carefully crafted journey, one unforgettable day at a time.
Arrive in Tokyo and transfer from Narita Airport to your hotel. On the way into the city, the scale builds gradually: neighbourhoods gather beneath expressways, trains pass between buildings, and the skyline keeps extending beyond the window.
Once settled, step out when you feel ready. Tokyo is often most revealing in its smaller details: bicycles lined neatly beside apartment blocks, convenience stores glowing at street corners, narrow restaurants tucked beneath towers and crowds moving through crossings with barely a break in pace. For a first evening, simply watch the city find its own order.
Use your Tokyo subway access to explore the city at street level, moving from the temple-lined lanes of Asakusa to the youthful energy of Harajuku and Shibuya. Omotesando and Ginza bring a more polished side of Tokyo, while Akihabara shifts the mood again with bright screens, arcades and a distinctly different pulse.
Later, rise to the Tembo Deck and Galleria at Tokyo Skytree. From above, the city spreads towards the horizon in an intricate web of rooftops, rivers, roads and railways. What felt immense on the ground becomes almost delicate from this height.
Turn towards Tokyo’s southern and bayside districts today, where broad waterfront spaces and contemporary architecture give the city a different scale. Explore at your own pace, using the subway to move between neighbourhoods before continuing to teamLab Planets.
Inside, water reaches your ankles; mirrored rooms seem to lose their edges, and flowers, light, and colour shift around you as you move. No fixed distance separates visitor and artwork here. When you step outside again, the daylight, glass and open sky around the bay feel unusually clear.
Leave Tokyo for a full-day journey towards Mt Fuji and Hakone. As the city loosens into wider landscapes, Mt Fuji becomes the defining presence of the day, rising above the surrounding countryside with the clean, unmistakable silhouette that has shaped Japanese art and imagination for centuries.
Continue through Hakone, where the mountain landscape unfolds from different perspectives. Take in elevated views by cable car before boarding the Lake Ashi Pirate Cruise, with forested slopes gathering around the water and Fuji appearing within the wider panorama when the weather is clear. After Tokyo, everything suddenly feels simpler in scale.
Spend the day at Tokyo DisneySea, leaving the familiar city behind for harbours, voyages and imagined worlds. The park unfolds through elaborate waterfront settings, rides and theatrical spaces, each designed with the kind of detail that rewards wandering as much as anticipation.
Take the day at your own pace rather than trying to fit everything in. As evening approaches, the atmosphere changes again as lamps begin to glow around the harbour and reflections spread across the water. Stay long enough to see the colours deepen before returning to Tokyo.
Check out of your Tokyo hotel and board the Shinkansen for Kyoto. The journey west leaves the capital's scale behind, carrying you to a city where older neighbourhoods, temple grounds, and everyday streets sit much closer together.
After checking in, keep the rest of the day open. Walk without a fixed plan for a while. Tiled roofs appear between newer buildings, noren curtains hang outside small restaurants, and bicycles pass along lanes bounded by old walls. By evening, even the street sounds seem to have changed.
Begin among the bamboo of Arashiyama, then continue to Fushimi Inari, where thousands of torii gates climb the wooded hillside. The path rises gradually beneath them, shifting between shrine grounds, forest shade and brief openings onto Kyoto below.
Continue to Nara, where deer wander freely through the park, and the pace loosens once more. Temple roofs appear beyond the trees, broad lawns replace Kyoto’s narrow lanes, and deer occasionally interrupt your footsteps as they cross the path. Return to Kyoto with the day's colours and textures still distinct from one another.
Check out of your Kyoto hotel and take the short Shinkansen journey to Osaka. After you check in, start exploring with your Osaka Amazing Pass. Osaka Castle Museum is a natural place to start, with the surrounding park and Nishinomaru Garden opening a broad green space around one of the city’s best-known landmarks.
Later, cross to Umeda and rise above the city at the Umeda Sky Building observatory, another pass-covered attraction during applicable admission hours. From here, Osaka spreads out in every direction, dense and restless below, before the streets begin gathering their evening lights.
Continue using your Osaka Amazing Pass to explore another side of the city. Head south to Shinsekai and take in Osaka from the Tsutenkaku observation deck, then move to Namba and Dotonbori as the streets grow busier and the signs grow brighter.
A Tombori River Cruise, also covered by the pass, brings the district down to water level, with bridges, neon façades and crowded promenades passing close beside the boat. Afterwards, stay among the lanes around Dotonbori as grills fire up, and queues form outside favourite counters. Osaka is particularly good at turning an ordinary evening into something difficult to leave.
Travel north for a full-day excursion to Amanohashidate and Ine. At Amanohashidate, a pine-covered strip of land stretches across the bay, separating blue water with an almost improbable neatness. Seen from above, sea, forest and sky seem to fall naturally into place.
Continue to Ine, where funaya houses stand directly along the shoreline, their lower levels opening towards the water. Boats rest beside wooden buildings and the village follows the curve of the bay rather than imposing itself upon it. The afternoon moves at the water's pace.
Check out of your Osaka hotel and transfer to Kansai International Airport for your onward flight. A few images remain unusually clear: water moving around your feet at teamLab, Fuji beyond the lake, vermilion disappearing into trees, pine trees crossing a strip of blue sea.
Wa: The Harmony at the Heart of Japan comes to an end here with Duniya Safari. Japan leaves many impressions behind, but perhaps the most lasting is how easily each one seems to find room beside the others.

Stay Where the Mountains Go Quiet
If your earlier glimpse of Hakone leaves you wanting more time in the mountains, an overnight stay gives the landscape room to slow down. Spend time around Lake Ashi, return to Owakudani without watching the clock, soak in an onsen and enjoy the quieter side of Hakone once the day visitors begin to leave.
Duniya Safari recommends adding 1 night in Hakone after Osaka for travellers who want a more restful end to the journey. An overnight stay turns Hakone from a sightseeing stop into an experience of its own, with time for an onsen stay and a slower final encounter with the mountains.
Where Memory Meets the Inland Sea
If you want to add a deeper historical chapter to the journey, Hiroshima brings together remembrance, resilience, and one of western Japan’s most beautiful coastal settings. Visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, walk past the Atomic Bomb Dome, then continue to Miyajima for Itsukushima Shrine, the waterfront and the familiar torii rising from the sea.
Duniya Safari recommends adding 2 nights in Hiroshima after Osaka. This gives one day to understand the city and another to experience Miyajima without rushing both into a single excursion, adding history and reflection while keeping the journey comfortably paced.
Northward, Into Another Japan
If you would like the journey to end somewhere that feels distinctly different from central Japan, continue north to Sapporo. Explore Odori Park, the city’s food scene and neighbourhoods, then venture beyond the centre for Hokkaido’s wider landscapes, seasonal gardens, mountain views and the open spaces that give the island its very different character.
Duniya Safari recommends adding 3 nights in Sapporo after Osaka. The flight north makes this more than a simple extension, so three nights give you enough time to enjoy Sapporo and experience a little of Hokkaido beyond the city, giving the journey a completely new final chapter.
