Japan, Carried Forward

Custom-crafted itineraries.
Designed around you, never around a template.
Japan does not preserve its past behind glass. Much of it survives because someone still practises it, tends it, builds with it, cooks it, performs it or passes it on. 継ぐ, Tsugu, carries that idea of inheritance forward, where continuity belongs to living hands rather than memory alone.
Tokyo begins with sumo still occupying a place in the modern city before the route turns toward Kanazawa, where gardens, samurai history, matcha, and geisha traditions remain part of the cultural landscape. Takayama and Shirakawa-go bring timber houses, mountain communities, and ways of living shaped over generations, while Kyoto, Uji, and Nara continue the thread through ritual, tea, and old places still woven into everyday Japan. Osaka closes the journey firmly in the present.
継ぐ Tsugu: Japan, Carried Forward is Duniya Safari’s journey through a country that keeps its inheritance alive by continuing to use it, adapt it and place it carefully into the hands of the next generation.
What's included
A carefully crafted journey, one unforgettable day at a time.
Arrive in Tokyo and transfer from Narita Airport to your hotel in Shinjuku. Railway lines, apartment blocks and towers gather along the way until the city seems to surround you from every direction.
After checking in, step out towards Shinjuku and Kabukicho. Giant screens, neon façades and packed crossings dominate the main streets, while narrow lanes and tiny restaurants sit only a few turns away. Keep the first evening simple and allow Tokyo to introduce itself at street level, bright, crowded and unmistakably of the present.
Use your Tokyo subway access to explore the capital, moving through Asakusa and Sensoji, Meiji Shrine, Shibuya, the Imperial Gardens and Odaiba. Temple grounds, gardens, crossings and waterfront districts show very different faces of the same city.
Later, return to Shinjuku for a live sumo experience. Watch the ceremony, movement and technique of one of Japan’s oldest sporting traditions before the opportunity for a photograph. Outside, one of Tokyo’s brightest neighbourhoods carries on around you; inside, familiar gestures repeat much as they have for generations.
Leave Tokyo for a full-day journey towards Mt Fuji, Chureito Pagoda and Lake Kawaguchiko. At Chureito, the pagoda rises above the hillside with Fuji beyond, creating one of those Japanese views that feels instantly familiar even on a first visit.
Continue towards Lake Kawaguchiko, where the mountain appears across open water and changing light. Fuji may reveal itself fully or spend part of the day behind cloud, but its presence shapes the landscape around it. The view has drawn travellers for generations, yet no two days beneath the mountain are quite the same.
Check out of your Tokyo hotel and board the Shinkansen for Kanazawa. After you arrive and check in, spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace, starting with Kenrokuen Garden or wandering toward the Higashi Chaya district.
Follow the Asano River or continue through streets lined with traditional façades and tea houses. Kanazawa feels carefully tended rather than frozen, with gardens, waterways and older neighbourhoods continuing quietly within the modern city around them.
Set out on a walking tour through Kanazawa’s old samurai district. Narrow lanes, earthen walls, gateways and former residences preserve the scale of a neighbourhood once shaped by warrior families, with each turn revealing another fragment of the city’s earlier life.
Take time to notice the smaller details rather than only the grander structures: garden walls, wooden entrances and streets designed long before modern traffic. Kanazawa’s history remains close enough to walk through, threaded into neighbourhoods that continue to belong to the city around them.
Check out of your Kanazawa hotel and travel by bus through the mountains to Takayama. After checking in, spend the evening around Sanmachi Suji, the Miyagawa River promenade and Nakabashi Bridge, where dark timber façades and narrow streets give the old town its distinctive character.
As daylight fades, shopfronts quieten, and the streets take on a softer mood beside the river. Takayama’s beauty lies in how naturally these older buildings remain part of the town, used, maintained and passed through as part of everyday life.
Spend the day exploring Takayama and the UNESCO mountain village of Shirakawa-go. Travel deeper into the Japanese Alps, where steep-roofed gassho-zukuri houses sit between fields and mountains, their distinctive silhouettes shaped by heavy winter snow.
Walk through the village and take in the houses from ground level, then look across the settlement from higher viewpoints where the roofs gather beneath the surrounding peaks. Shirakawa-go feels inseparable from its landscape, with architecture and mountain weather having shaped one another over generations.
Check out of your Takayama hotel and take the Shinkansen via Nagoya to Kyoto. After checking in, spend the evening around Gion, Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park, where old streets and shrine grounds bring another character to the journey.
Stay as daylight fades and lanterns begin to glow around Yasaka and the lanes beyond. Wooden façades sit beside modern shops, bicycles pass through narrow streets, and familiar neighbourhood routes continue around places known for centuries. Kyoto wears its inheritance lightly in the evening.
Travel towards Arashiyama and board the Sagano Scenic Railway, following the Hozugawa River through wooded hills and changing seasonal views. The train carries you gradually away from Kyoto’s denser streets into a landscape long associated with the western edge of the city.
Continue by boat along the Hozugawa River before exploring the bamboo forest at Arashiyama. Railway, river and footpath each reveal the valley differently, from the movement of the train to the slower drift of the boat and the shaded paths beneath the bamboo..
Check out of your Kyoto hotel and take the short Shinkansen journey to Osaka. After checking in, use your Osaka Amazing Pass to explore a city that moves at a very different tempo, with broad avenues, busy commercial districts and a skyline that feels firmly contemporary.
Visit Osaka Castle, rise above the city at Umeda Sky Building or take to the water on a cruise covered by the pass. Historic landmarks remain part of the same urban fabric as towers, shopping streets and waterways, without asking the city around them to stand still.
Travel from Osaka for a full-day excursion through Nara and Uji. In Nara, deer wander through the park towards Todaiji Temple, where the great wooden hall and its immense Buddha have remained at the heart of the city’s spiritual landscape.
Continue to Uji, visiting Uji Park and Byodoin Temple beside the river. The elegant temple and surrounding grounds bring the day to a quieter close, linking another layer of Japan’s cultural inheritance with places that remain part of daily journeys, pilgrimages and visits.
Check out of your Osaka hotel and transfer to Kansai International Airport for your departure. A few images remain particularly clear: sumo beneath Tokyo lights, Fuji beyond Chureito, old lanes in Kanazawa, timber streets in Takayama and steep roofs gathered beneath the mountains.
継ぐ Tsugu: Japan, Carried Forward ends here with Duniya Safari. The rituals of sumo, samurai streets, timber houses, shrine paths and old neighbourhoods have not been pushed into the past; they remain visible in places still lived in, cared for and carried forward.
