The Shape of Winter, from Helsinki to Lapland

Custom-crafted itineraries.
Designed around you, never around a template.
Winter begins at the water’s edge. In Finland, it settles over Baltic shores, deepens as the journey moves north and eventually takes over the landscape entirely. A day across the sea in Estonia adds another frosted cityscape before the route returns to Finland and continues towards frozen water, Arctic nights and the snowbound reaches of Lapland.
Across nine days, Helsinki introduces winter through the Baltic and a day trip to Tallinn before the train carries you north to Kemi, where the frozen sea becomes part of the experience aboard an icebreaker. Rovaniemi takes the journey deeper into Lapland, with an evening beneath the Arctic sky, huskies and reindeer across the snow, and Korouoma where waterfalls stand frozen against the canyon walls.
Lumi: The Shape of Winter, from Helsinki to Lapland, is Duniya Safari’s journey through a season that keeps changing its face, from frosted city streets and a frozen sea to Arctic darkness, animal trails in the snow and ice held still in the wilderness.
What's included
A carefully crafted journey, one unforgettable day at a time.
Arrive in Helsinki, where your transfer from the airport brings you into a capital shaped by the Baltic. In winter, the city feels pared back to pale light, dark water and clean northern lines, with tram tracks cutting through quiet streets and the waterfront carrying the sharpness of the season.
The first evening stays unhurried: a walk through Esplanadi, coffee somewhere warm, or time by the harbour as daylight fades early across the water. Streetlights begin to glow against the cold, cafés draw people indoors, and Helsinki settles naturally into its northern rhythm.
Cross the Gulf of Finland for a guided day in Tallinn, with the return cruise included. The journey itself sets the mood, leaving Helsinki behind across cold Baltic water before Estonia’s capital rises in stone towers, steep roofs and medieval streets.
Move through Tallinn’s historic heart, where winter gathers around old walls, church spires and cobbled lanes. Warm cafés offer an easy pause between walks before the return voyage carries you back across the Baltic to Helsinki.
Board the train north to Kemi, watching southern Finland gradually give way to longer stretches of forest and snow. The journey carries you beyond the capital's rhythm and toward a quieter part of the country, where the landscape grows whiter, and settlements grow farther apart.
After arrival, settle into Kemi and take the evening slowly. A short walk through town or towards the waterfront is enough to register how much the scenery has changed. The Baltic is still close, but here its edges belong to a much colder world.
Head out from Kemi for the Icebreaker cruise, travelling onto the frozen Gulf of Bothnia. The ship pushes through sheets of sea ice, opening dark water between white expanses and turning the frozen Baltic into one of the journey’s most striking landscapes.
Back in Kemi, the afternoon leaves behind a series of stark images: steel meeting ice, black water opening beneath the ship and a horizon almost emptied of colour. The evening returns to the stillness of town after hours spent out on the frozen sea.
Check out and take the train from Kemi to Rovaniemi, heading further inland and deeper into Finnish Lapland. Snow sits heavier here, forests feel denser, and the city carries that unmistakable Arctic sense of being surrounded by wilderness even when streets and cafés are close at hand.
Spend the remaining hours around the centre or walk towards the river as the light begins to soften. Snowbanks edge the streets, warm windows glow against the early darkness, and the northern quiet becomes part of the city itself.
The day remains easy before the evening Northern Lights hunt, when the city gives way to darker surroundings and a clearer view of the Arctic sky. Photography and a barbecue are part of the experience, with the night spent watching for the aurora away from Rovaniemi's brighter lights.
Snow underfoot, firelight and long stretches of darkness create the setting while the sky decides what it will reveal. On a clear aurora night, colour begins quietly above the horizon before the darkness takes on an entirely different character.
Spend the day among two animals inseparable from Lapland’s northern identity at a husky park and reindeer farm, with a sleigh ride carrying you across the snow. Huskies bring speed and restless energy to the landscape, while reindeer belong to a quieter rhythm shaped by the far north.
Later, you can visit nearby Santa Claus Village on your own or stay a little longer among Rovaniemi’s snowy surroundings. Paw prints, hoof marks and sleigh tracks cut across the white, giving this Lapland day a very different kind of movement.
Travel out to Korouoma Canyon for a winter hike among its frozen waterfalls. Water that rushes down the rock in warmer months now hangs in great walls and columns of ice, while the trail winds through snow-covered forest and the canyon's steep contours.
A hot barbecue lunch brings welcome warmth into the middle of the day. Around it, Korouoma remains almost entirely still, with ice fixed against the rock and snow softening the forest floor. Winter here feels less like weather and more like a landscape suspended in place.
Your transfer takes you from the hotel to Rovaniemi Airport for the journey home. Outside, Lapland remains wrapped in snow, with pale light settling over the forests and roads on the final morning in the north.
Lumi: The Shape of Winter from Helsinki to Lapland ends here with Duniya Safari, after nine days that began beside the Baltic and travelled steadily towards a Finland shaped by ice, darkness, snow, and the deep stillness of the Arctic.

These are a few of our favourite additions if you’d like to make this itinerary longer
For travellers who want to stay deeper in the Lapland landscape, Kakslauttanen is a natural extension of Rovaniemi. The experience is less about adding another sightseeing stop and more about changing how you experience the Arctic, with forest, snow, and long northern nights surrounding the stay itself.
The highlight is an overnight in a glass igloo or Kelo-Glass Igloo, where the Arctic sky remains visible from the warmth of the room. Depending on the stay chosen, you can also spend time around the snowy resort grounds, with winter activities such as husky or reindeer experiences available locally. You may see the Northern Lights during the aurora season, though sightings always depend on natural conditions.
We recommend 1 to 2 nights in Kakslauttanen after Rovaniemi. One night gives the journey its signature glass-igloo experience, while two nights make the stay feel less rushed and leave more time to enjoy the Arctic surroundings. Duniya Safari can customise the transfer, accommodation type and any additional winter experiences around the extension.
