Switzerland & Italy

Custom-crafted itineraries.
Designed around you, never around a template.
Switzerland begins in Alpine blue, where lakes, rivers, glacier light and snow keep the palette cool and luminous. The Bernina crossing carries those colours through silver, white and slate before Italy begins to warm them, first through marble and deep lake water, then through terracotta, ochre and sunlit stone, until the journey reaches the Roman gold promised by the title.
Across twelve days, Zurich opens in blue and silver before Lucerne deepens the Alpine palette with lake water, green slopes and glacier white. Chur brings quieter stone tones before the Bernina Express becomes the great transition south. Milan introduces warmer marble and Italian light, Florence turns towards terracotta and Tuscan earth, while Rome gathers the final shades in travertine, amber and gold.
From Alpine Blue to Roman Gold: Switzerland & Italy is Duniya Safari’s journey through a changing European palette, where colour follows geography and the landscape itself seems to warm as the route moves south.
What's included
The experiences that make this journey special
A carefully crafted journey, one unforgettable day at a time.
Arrive in Zurich and start using your Swiss Travel Pass at the airport, letting Switzerland’s rail and public transport network take over from day one. Explore the city through the Old Town, the Limmat and the lakefront, where church spires, orderly façades and clear water establish the cooler tones that will define the opening half of the journey.
Stay close to the river or follow Bahnhofstrasse towards Lake Zurich as evening settles. The mountains can wait. For now, the palette is restrained: blue water, pale stone and the soft silver of a city reflected after dusk.
Use your Swiss Travel Pass to reach Rhine Falls, where the Rhine abandons Zurich’s composure and breaks into spray, foam and extraordinary force. Later, visit the Lindt Home of Chocolate, shifting the day from one unmistakably Swiss spectacle to another, this time behind the doors of a world devoted to cocoa and chocolate-making.
Return to Zurich with the rush of the falls behind you. Around the lake and the Limmat, the water becomes calm again, catching the evening in softer shades.
Travel from Zurich to Lucerne using your Swiss Travel Pass. Discover Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument before taking a Lake Lucerne cruise, where deep water, wooded slopes and mountain silhouettes frame one of Switzerland’s most graceful cities.
Once ashore, wander through the Old Town's painted façades or stay by the promenade. Zurich’s restrained blues have opened into something richer here, edged by green hills and peaks that seem to draw steadily closer. Tomorrow, colour gives way almost entirely to snow.
Set out for Mount Titlis, using your Swiss Travel Pass for the applicable transport into the mountains. The ascent carries you beyond the gentler scenery around Lucerne until snowfields and high ridges dominate the view, before the Ice Flyer takes you across the glacier landscape itself.
Later, return to Lucerne and watch colour gradually return at lake level. Painted buildings, green slopes and the water feel almost vivid after hours spent among snow and ice. The following day introduces another shade altogether, as the route turns towards Switzerland’s oldest city.
The journey continues from Lucerne towards Chur, trading lakeside scenery for the dramatic landscapes of Graubünden. Spend some time exploring Chur, Switzerland’s oldest city, where narrow streets, historic buildings and a picturesque old town offer a glimpse into the region’s character before continuing into the surrounding Alps.
The highlight of the day is the Arosa Scenic Railway, winding through forests, mountain valleys and spectacular Alpine scenery on its way towards Arosa. With the Swiss Travel Pass covering the journey, the route itself becomes part of the experience, offering a beautiful introduction to the landscapes around Chur.
Board the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano, with your reserved seat turning the border crossing into one of the defining experiences of the journey. Glacial landscapes, mountain valleys and changing vegetation accompany the route south before you continue from Tirano to Milan, arriving in Italy by late afternoon.
Step out into a city of marble, formal streets and distinctly warmer light. The Alps have not disappeared, but their cool blues and whites now sit behind you. Brera or the area around the Duomo makes an easy first evening, while Italy begins introducing cream, stone and the first hint of gold.
Leave Milan for Lake Como, where the mountain scenery of Switzerland seems to return in another language. A cruise brings steep slopes, elegant villas, gardens and lakeside settlements into view, proving that Alpine blue has crossed the border with you, even if everything along the shoreline now feels unmistakably Italian.
Return to Milan later and let Brera or Navigli carry the evening. Como is the perfect bridge between the two halves of the itinerary: familiar water and mountains remain, but the edges have softened into villas, cypress, stone terraces and southern light.
Leave Milan by train and continue to Florence, arriving in a city where the palette shifts decisively towards warmer tones. Terracotta roofs, pale stone, Renaissance façades and the Arno replace Milan’s cooler marble and urban polish, while Brunelleschi’s dome rises above the historic centre as the city’s defining silhouette.
Spend the later hours around Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio or across the river in Oltrarno. Florence feels like the moment Italy settles fully into earthier colours, with stone, tile and late-afternoon light preparing the way for Tuscany beyond the city the next day.
Travel through Tuscany to Siena and Siena Cathedral, before continuing through San Gimignano, Chianti and Pisa. Striped marble, medieval towers, vineyards, and old civic squares bring ochre, cypress green, and weathered stone to a landscape shaped as much by centuries of human rivalry as by the surrounding countryside.
Return to Florence as the afternoon mellows. Oltrarno or Piazza Santo Spirito suits the evening, when façades take on deeper shades and the Arno catches the last light. The journey has travelled a long way from glacier white. Tomorrow, Rome introduces the colour promised from the beginning.
Travel by train from Florence to Rome, then enter the ancient city through the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Travertine, broken columns and sun-warmed ruins bring antiquity into full view, with centuries of empire layered across the ground beneath you.
Spend the evening around Monti as the stone changes character in the falling light. Rome does not need literal gold to fulfil the title. Amber façades, ancient masonry and the glow that settles over the ruins are enough to make the final palette unmistakable.
See more of Rome at a flexible pace, where white marble, pale stone and sunlit façades add another shade to the city’s warmer palette. Later, enter Vatican City for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, moving from sculpted surfaces and classical forms into galleries filled with colour, detail and centuries of artistic ambition.
By the time Michelangelo’s ceiling opens overhead, the journey has travelled far from Switzerland’s glacier white. Rome has transformed that cool beginning into something richer, warmer and unmistakably Italian, with marble giving way to painted heavens before the final evening settles over the city.
After breakfast, check out and prepare for your onward journey. Twelve days have taken you through lake blue, waterfall silver, glacier white, and Chur’s quieter stone before the Bernina crossing carried the route into Italian marble, lagoon reflections, Tuscan earth, and Roman warmth.
From Alpine Blue to Roman Gold: Switzerland & Italy ends here with Duniya Safari. The colours changed almost imperceptibly as the journey moved south, until the cool light of the Alps gave way to the warm glow of Rome.
